Alan Gutterman
Becoming a Business Counselor
Alan Gutterman has served in many professional capacities— as a lawyer, author, entrepreneur, COO, teacher and coach. Gutterman has also served as the chief legal officer of a leading international wholesaler in the IT industry.
He is a well-known and widely respected business counselor for small and large businesses, entrepreneurs and investors. As a partner and senior counsel in internationally recognized law firms, he specialized in the areas of general corporate and securities matters, venture capital, mergers and acquisitions, international law and transactions, strategic business alliances, technology transfers and intellectual property.
He is currently a partner of The General Counsel LLC, which focuses on providing high-value general counsel services to emerging and mid-sized companies, and is the director of the Center for Comparative Management Studies.
Gutterman has been an innovator in the organization and communication of practical legal and business advice. He is the developer and author of numerous scholarly resources and publications. As a successful entrepreneur, Gutterman has built his publication business—Gutterman Law & Business—into an emerging provider of content for legal professionals.
In addition, he has had “on the ground” experience managing an emerging business as the chief operating officer of a broadband media company.
Gutterman has been an adjunct faculty member at several colleges and universities, and has served as an officer of bar association committees, and as a member of the executive committees of the Business Law and International Law Sections of the State Bar of California and as the co-chair or vice-chair of the Asia-Pacific, Europe and International Commercial Transactions Committees and the International Corporate Counsel Forum of the International Law Section of the American Bar Association.
He received his law degree from Boalt Hall at the University of California in Berkeley and earned a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Law at the University of Cambridge.
